Five employees of an American-owned meat-processing plant in
China have been arrested by authorities investigating after a television report
showed outdated and mouldy meat being used to make nuggets and other products
for fast-food chains, including McDonalds, KFC, 7-Eleven, Pizza Hut and Burger
King.
The five workers included the quality department manager for Shanghai
Husi Food Co., a subsidiary of OSI Group of Aurora, Illinois.
Shanghai Husi is believed to have produced 5,108 crates of meat
products, including McNuggets, pork patties and beef steaks, using out-of-date
or moldy materials, according to the bureau and Shanghai's food and drug
administration, which are jointly investigating the case.
About 100 metric tons
of the products have since been sealed up as the probe continues.
OSI says it is investigating the report and cooperating with
government agencies.
