Another barn fire claims 2,000 pigs

A barn fire early Tuesday morning claimed 2,000 pigs on a farm near Parkhill.

It took fire crews from Ailsa Craig, Grand Bend, and Thedford to extinguish the flames coming from the barn.

Constable Liz Melvin said the county fire investigator and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office are investigating.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, nor has a damage estimate been given.

A barn fire near Delaware early Sunday killed 500 goats and 30 cows.

A dozen Ararbian horses were died in a fire near Mount Forest Jan. 14, and 43 race horses died in a fire at Classy Lane Stables near Cambridge on Jan. 4.

Ontario Federation of Agriculture president Don McCabe was on CBC Radio in Kitchener today, expressing condolences to owners for their losses and saying it’s not unusual to have more barn fires during cold winter weather.
