Simplot’s GMO spud clears one hurdle

A genetically-modified potato variety that can survive amidst the virus that caused the Irish potato famine received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration.

It found the potato is not substantially different than commercial potatoes already on the market.

But Simplot still needs approval from the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

So far most Canadian potato growers remain sceptical, fearing a consumer backlash against all potatoes if the GMO variety is cleared for production here.
