Campbell
Soup Company said it supports the enactment of federal legislation for a single
mandatory labeling standard for foods derived from genetically modified
organisms.
But the
support is somewhat misleading because it’s simply preference for a single
national standard instead of differing state standards.
Some
states have begun to enact GMO labeling requirements.
The
world's largest soup-maker said on Thursday that it believes if all foods and
beverages regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department
of Agriculture are labeled for GMOs clearly, it will help raise consumer
awareness.
But the
question remains whether consumers are aware of the risks and benefits related
to genetic modifications. There is no evidence of any risks to public health.
Country of Origin labelling requirements clearly added to meat-packing company costs to keep products separate, accurately labeled, warehoused and distributed.
Campbell Soup has not talked about those added costs.
