Be Seen, Be Safe

Tim Nelson, former head of the Ontario Poultry Industry Council, is promoting an electronic system called Be Seen, Be Safe, to keep track of vehicles entering farms.

The system involves electronic sensors at the farm entrance and drivers entering the premises must use a smart phone to either scan a code on a sign at the entry point or e-mail the farm.

The aim is to prevent the spread of diseases such as avian influenza among poultry farms and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PED) among hog farms.

If a disease outbreak does happen, a log of vehicle traffic will help identify potential sources and spread.

The system has been set up at the Poultry Industry Council’s site south of Guelph.

The company foresees potential markets around the world.
