Cargill is stepping up its
research into sow nutrition by renting a 2,000-sow farm.
It’s at Britt, Iowa, just
over the border from Cargill’s research centre at Elk River, Minnesota.
Cargill’s
research team will be able to see how feeds influence gestation, lactation, and
gilt development.
The farm
will also take visitors.
"We
can continue to monitor how feeding the sow impacts the performance of
offspring all the way to final market weight,” said Brooke Humphrey, global
pork technology director for Cargill’s animal feed business.
Cargill
will use this capability to focus on piglet livability, and provide on-farm
training to employees in either technical or commercial roles.
