BSE detected in Alberta

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it has confirmed bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or mad cow’s disease) in an 81/2-year-old cow in Alberta.

The CFIA said its an atypical form of the disease so “market access for Canadian animals and beef products should be unaffected.”

The CFIA waited until nearly 6 p.m, EST, Friday, to reveal that it had notified the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

Maybe they hoped most news media would miss the story.
