Veterinarians Act up for review

The provincial government has posted a notice that it is reviewing the Ontario Veterinarians Act and there is opportunity to make comments.

The posting comes after the Ontario College of Veterinarians published its proposals and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs invited public comment.

The government said the proposed changes should not increase costs for veterinary practices, farmers or pet owners.

Among the proposed changes is “recognition that veterinary care is delivered by a team and acknowledging the roles of veterinary technicians within the system (including providing title protection for the terms veterinary technician, veterinary technologist and any recognized abbreviations, and bringing these professionals under common oversight with veterinarians).”

It also said there is “a need to streamline the current complaints and resolutions process, including the investigations component.”

The proposals also present “an opportunity to develop a formal quality assurance program to better ensure continual learning and competence of College members.”
