Metro profits up by 10.4 per cent

Metro Inc. reports profits for its first quarter are 10.4 per cent greater than the same quarter last year and revenues are up by 6.6 per cent.

The profit was $218.8 million and sales were $4.55 billion.

The company said shoppers shifted to discount supermarkets, such as its Food Basics chain, and from brand names to its private labels.

It announced the introduction of a loyalty program called Moi for its Quebec supermarkets and Jean Coutu pharmacy chain. In Ontario it will retain its Air Miles program.

Moi will be linked to Royal Bank of Canada through a credit card. Loblaws is linked with Imperial Commerce with its PC credit card and Sobeys with Scotiabank through its Scene Plus credit card.
