Step zoo vaccine for pigs coming

A new vaccine against Streptococcus equii zooepidemicus of pigs is about to hit the market.

It was developed by a research team at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at Saskatoon to counter a disease that is difficult to diagnose, has symptoms similar to African Swine Fever and is deadly to young pigs.

The vaccine has been totally effective in preventing deaths in trials that have been done, although they do get sick and go off feed for a short time.

Dr. Matheus Costa, an assistant professor at Saskatoon and an adjunct professor at Utrecht University in Europe said the vaccine will also reduce shedding of the virus and therefore the rate of spread to other pigs.
