The Prince Edward Island government is buying 38 hectares
of from six farmers along a creek that has been polluted by pesticides several
times in the last few years.
Trout have died of pesticide poisoning along Barclay’s
Creek.
Premier Robert Ghiz says the purchases will cost about
$250,000 and the land will now be managed by Trout Unlimited’s chapter for
Prince County.
The province says the land is prone to soil erosion and
surface runoff.
The purchase was recommended by a government committee
formed to prevent fish kills on the Island.
It's quite the stunning approach to the challenge. Usually governments simply come down hard on land owners.
