Kroger Co. has agreed to remove its “raised in a humane
environment” claim on store-brand chicken to settle a federal lawsuit claiming
the label deceived consumers because the animals were raised under conventional
industry production practices.
The settlement comes hard on the heels of a similar
settlement with Purdue which says it will no longer use "natural" in labels for his
Heartland-brand chicken.
Krogers is the largest supermarket chain in the United
States. Its lawyers filed a court statement jointly with the Compassion Over
Killing organization, saying the case has been settled.
