The Ontario Pork Council says the swine industry is proving
that it can get rid of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.
It reports that its Area Regional Control and Elimination
(ARC&E) protocol has so far successfully eliminated the virus from 10
nursery sites, 10 finishing sites and 12 sow sites, some of which are
farrow-to-finish operations.
It’s on track to eliminate the virus from 123 of the 127
sites that have been identified as infected by the end of this year and by all
but one of the 127 by next year.
Ninety-four of the 127 sites are enrolled in the ARC&E
program.
There have been 63 confirmed outbreaks of the virus since
January, but only five since April. The most recent one was July 21.
Manitoba had been quiet for months, but has had three recent
outbreaks.
