Liberals may restore prison farms

The Liberal government is pondering the issue of restoring prison farms that were closed in 2010 by the Conservatives.

Public consultations will be held in Kingston where it might open the first two farms.

The CBC is already reporting about a prisoner who says tending dairy cattle taught him patience and anger management.

The Harper government closed six in farms operating at prisons in New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Opponents argued the decision was made without properly considering the essential skills the farms taught the participating inmates.

There was also criticism that local community members had not been adequately consulted.
