Loblaws consolidating distribution

Loblaws plans to close distribution centres in Laval and Ottawa next year and contract a Cornwall company to handle the work.

There are about 545 employees at the Laval facility and 230 at Ottawa and their union contract expires at the end of this month.

A Loblaws spokesman told reporters that the company will be negotiating with employees soon over the transition to contracting out the work.

Loblaws said the Cornwall facility is one of the most automated iin the industry. Loblaws operates a large and relatively new distribution centre in Cambridge, Ont.

It is Canada’s largest retailer of groceries, produce and meats.
