Cow slaughter sets records

Americans are culling cows at a record pace. Droughted pastures and high input costs are cited as reasons.

The extra meat from cows is offsetting declines in slaughter weights for fed cattle, which is also a reflection of higher input costs.

The United States Department of Agriculture reported that the pace of cow slaughter in July is the highest since it began reporting cow cull rates in 1986.
