Gay Lea has buyer for Thornloe

Gay Lea said it is going to sell Thornloe Cheese, which it closed last year, to Triple “A Cheese of Mississauga. The plant is at Temiskaming Shores in Northern Ontario.

No price has been disclosed for the deal which includes the plant, brand, cheese recipes and plant supply quota.

“We are pleased to have found a buyer with an innovative vision for Thornloe Cheese,” said Suzanna Dalrymple, Gay Lea’s president and chief executive officer.

“We believe a different concept, and a new facility, are needed for the brand to thrive in Northern Ontario – and we’re hopeful the considerable effort invested in this project – by both organizations – will deliver that outcome.”

Gay Lea bought the plant from East Gen dairy genetics company whose goal was to save the facility from closure.

It is the only plant processing grass-fed milk into butter and cheeses.
