The federal government is giving $825,000 towards
improvements and expansions to a truck wash at Brandon.
Thorough washing, disinfection and drying is key to
preventing the spread of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.
The funding will allow Blue Water Wash to add five
drive-through washing bays, a baking bay and an undercarriage washing system at
its Blumenort facility and a baking bay at its Brandon location.
Brandon is home to one of Canada’s largest hog-slaughtering
plants run by Maple Leaf Foods Inc.
Swine veterinarians recommend that trucks that haul hogs to
packing plants ought to be washed before they’re allowed back on farms.
The feds ought to be providing similar even more funding for truck washes in Ontario where there have been more than 75 outbreaks of PED in little more than a year. But that's politics, I guess.
