Animal rights group complains about Maple Lodge

Animal Justice, an animal rights group, has filed a complaints about bird abuse by Maple Lodge Farms of Norval, one of Ontario’s dominant chicken companies.

It filed the complaints with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which enforces national welfare standards, and with the Competition Bureau, which deals with false or misleading advertising.

The group alleges Maple Lodge Farms is misleading consumers by portraying itself as a family company committed to the humane treatment of chickens.

It points to hidden camera footage released recently by Mercy for Animals that claimed it was taken inside the company's plant in Brampton, Ont., and showed birds dying of cold while being transported to the plant.

Some birds that have frozen solid are tossed among staff who laugh about the situation.
