New quarantine zone includes 24 farms

The second outbreak of avian influenza in Oxford County has led to a second 10-kilometer quarantine zone with another 24 poultry farms essentially in lock-down.

That increases the total to 53 farms under quarantine. The others are within 10 kilometers of a turkey farm that was hit about three weeks ago.

Farm and Food Care has also cancelled its annual Breakfast on The Farm event because of the threat of spreading the disease.

Dan and Glynis Veldman have two egg-layer barns on the farm where this year’s event was to take place. They are not within either quarantine zone.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the turkey-farm and broiler-breeder chicken farm outbreaks are not linked, They are about 30 kilometers apart.
