Feds support egg sexing research

Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay has announced $844,000 of support for the Ontario egg marketing board to study electronic scanning to determine the gender and fertility of eggs.

The technology will improve the capacity and efficiency of hatcheries, he said.

It will also rid the industry of criticism from animal rights activists for the destruction of male poults.

Just why egg farmers, among the richest of Canadian farmers, need this taxpayer support is questionable.
