More layoffs at HyLife

HyLife is laying off 87 employees, about 50 of them at Steinbach  and 29 at its processing plant at Neepewa, Man.

The decision to reduce the workforce by around 3.5 per cent is a result of inflation, rising production costs, market uncertainties and foreign exchange rates, the company said.

President and chief executive officer Grant Lazaruk said he remains optimistic about the future of the hog industry.

Earlier this month the company closed its processing plant at Windom, Minn., throwing about 1,000 employees out of work.

Premium Iowa Pork bought it out of bankruptcy.
