Some dairy farmers in the United States are dumping milk, but the situation is far different from Canada where the dumping Is done to avoid exceeding supply-management limits.
In the U.S. it’s because dairies don’t have enough capacity to process all the milk farmers are producing.
E-dairynews tells the tale and shows a video of Justin Malone, a farmer in Minnesota, hauling milk in a tanker into a field where it’s dumped.
“It’s the same situation for a lot of folks, is that, in the across the dairy industry, is we just don’t have enough processing to handle the amount of milk that the dairy industry is producing right now,” Malone said.
The U.S. dairy industry grew significantly over the past two years, adding nearly 60,000 new jobs, increasing average wages by 11 per cent, and increasing its total impact on the U.S. economy by $41 billion, according to the latest economic impact report from the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA).
One of the main challenges for the Canadians is how to deal with the excess milk without undermining supply-management production disciplines.
