Transport fine reduced


 The Canadian Agriculture Review Tribunal has reduced a $9,000 fine levied by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to $6,000.


Claudia Laroque was convicted of transporting a cow that was not fit.


Hamzeh Tarabichi got only sympathy from tribunal chairman when he said a Canadian Border Service Agent was rude and he ended up being fined $1,300 for importing unknown meat in a lunch when he was going through customs at a Montreal airport.


The tribunal lifted an $11,000 fine against Alain Béland who the Canadian Food Inspection charged for transporting a cow that was not fit.


Tribunal member Geneviève Parent reached her decision based on the “balance of probabilities” that he was not guilty.


Four people fined for importing pork products failed to win their appeals.


Black Creek Livestock Ltd. and W. Thur and Sons Ltd. of Elmira won their appeal against a CFIA fine when they testified the pig was not lame when loaded. There was conflicting testimony from veterinarians for the CFIA and the defendants. Neither the Ontario farmer nor trucker involved are in those businesses now.


Transport Yvan Parenteau Et Fils Inc. lost its appeal of a $10,000 CFIA fine for failing to allow inspectors to check the condition of animals and where they were being confined.
