Turkey agency tightens its belt

The national turkey agency has received federal government approval to trim production for the balance of this year.

The Farm Products Council of Canada granted its approval on Apr. 29, cutting the goal for commercial production from 144.000,000 kg. to 125,900,000 kg,

The agency said in a letter to the council that processor margins need to increase and that whole-bird sales for the Christmas market were disappointing.

There are additional quota allocations to provincial marketing boards to allow for breeder-flock production and exports.
