China aggressively rebuilds hog farming

China is aggressively rebuilding its hog production capacity following the devastating effects of African Swine Fever which some have estimated resulted in the loss of half of the national herd.

Among the projects is one by Muyuan Foods which is stocking 64,000 sows and setting up 21 buildings and plans to market 2.1 million hogs per year. It will be the largest hog farm in the world.

"We have hit a very favourable period for development. Pig prices are very high, our profits are really good, and cash flow is really ample," Qin Jun, Muyuan's vice general manager, told Reuters news agency at the company's headquarters in Nanyang city in central China.
