Tai to become Biden’s U.S. Trade Secretary

When President-elect Joe Biden takes office in January, the U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will be replaced by Katherine Tai.

She has worked on the key Ways and Means Committee of Congress and in the U.S. Trade Representative Office.

Three key issues that will immediately face her will be rejoining the World Trade Organization by agreeing to nominate members for disputes-settling panels, relations with China and trying to join the Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership.

There are unlikely to be any major changes to relations with Canada. It’s likely that the move the U.S. has made to challenge Canada’s dairy imports practices will continue to be pursued by Tai.
