CFA issues wish list


The Canadian Federation of Agriculture has issued a wish list for what it says is necessary for a sustainable future for the industry.


Extend carbon pricing exemptions to natural gas and propane used in farming to ease energy costs. 

 Consult and create a reliable supply chain for essential farming inputs such as fertilizer. 

 Make interest-free limits for farm advances permanent to support farmers with rising production costs. 

Implement permanent full-year depreciation for farm equipment purchases to stimulate investment. 

Start a grant program similar to the Canada Digital Adoption Program for on-farm risk management. 

Use climate data to trigger responsive support for farmers facing extreme weather. 

Boost AgriStability program coverage to 85 per cent to enhance predictability and support levels for farmers. 

Ensure timely and science-based regulatory decisions for pesticides to remain competitive on import and export food markets.. 

Remove the requirement for farms to file returns for Underused Housing Tax to reduce administrative burdens. 

Support right to repair legislative measures to ensure farmers can maintain their equipment. 

Expand and extend railway inter-switching options to improve transportation flexibility. 

Fund an adjudication office to oversee a grocery industry code of conduct.

Strengthen Canada's role in removing non-tariff barriers to enhance market access for agricultural products. 

Secure no further access concessions in future trade agreements for supply-managed farm sectors. 

Fund the creation of a body to execute a workforce strategy for the agricultural sector. 

Increase the capital gains tax exemption in line with current farmland market values to aid farmer transitions. 

Amend tax laws to facilitate farm ownership transfers within families, including to siblings.
