Clemens Group contracts Ontario hogs

Clemens Food Group of Coldwater, Mich., has signed a “significant” block contract with the Ontario Pork marketing board.

A board employee said the contract brings “some stability” to the market which has been struggling with a lack of slaughter capacity aggravated by the closure of a large hog-slaughter plant owned by Olymel and an end to sakes t that province.”

Clemens is expanding its plant at Coldwater to increase daily capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 hogs.

It is adding a second shift to handle the increase.

The Clemens Group is the fifth-largest pork processor in the United States, has been family owed for six generations and has its head offices in Hatfield, Pa.

It markets under several brand names, the main one being Hatfield.
