Two Ontario growers post top wheat yields

Jeff Cook of London and Mark Davis of Napanee took top spots in this year’s Great Lakes Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) competition.

Cook had the top yield at 173.4 bushels per acre.

Davis had the highest yield potential at 117.6 bushels per acre.

Michigan growers placed second and third in both categories.

Fall planting conditions were excellent so winter wheat had a good start.

Cool spring weather and a lack of rain presented challenges, then it turned wet into harvest season, yet cool nighttime temperatures through the grain fill period translated to higher yields than anticipated.

The competition is a joint effort of Grain Farmers of Ontario, Michigan State University, Michigan Wheat Program, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and the University of Guelph.
