Meat Institute comments on COVID-19

The American Meat Institute has issued a carefully-worded statement from its president and chief executive officer, Julie Anna Potts, after the U.S. government laid charges against JBS USA for failing to adequately protect workers at its Greeley, Colorado, plant from COVID-19.

She said that the meat-packing industry got conflicting advice from the Occupational and Safety Health Administration in March, such as requiring workers to wear masks, then advising that masks are not necessary.

She said meat packers take the issue of worker safety seriously and tried hard to acquire personal protective equipment and to keep sick workers out of the plants.

"Most importantly, as evidenced in trends in data collected by the Food and Environment Reporting Network and The New York Times, these many programs and controls once in place worked and continue to work. Positive cases of COVID-19 associated with meat and poultry companies are trending down compared with cases nationwide,” her statement said.
