California bans shows

California state veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones has issued a ban on dairy cattle and poultry exhibitions to combat the spread of H5N1 avian Influenza. The ban will remain in place until the outbreak is under control.

This follows Governor Gavin Newsom’s state of emergency declaration last month.

The most recent rash of outbreaks began in August and has affected more than 700 dairy herds and 60 poultry flocks, impacting more than 15 million birds across California.

Within the last 30 days, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said it has confirmed 149 new outbreaks.

Two-thirds of the state’s dairy herds have the virus In their milk.

There is new research, yet to receive peer-review approval for publication, which identified genetic material that enables the virus to multiply in mammals, increasing the risk of becoming a pandemic.
