Possburg urges satisfying Trump

Florian Possburg, partner in Polar Pork which is one of Canada’s largest hog producers, is urging the federal government to satisfy U.S. President-elect Donald Trump so he cancels plans to impose tariffs on all Canadian products, including pigs and pork.

Possberg issued a statement in which he said Canadian pork producers already receive less for their pigs due to freight and border fees, adding that an additional 25 per cent tariff would “likely reduce” hog and pork exports to the U.S.

It would also likely result in production cuts in hog and pork production in Canada, he said.

Canada ships more than 5 million live hogs into the United States annually, with the U.S. is also the largest importer of Canadian processed pork.

Possberg said “turmoil in Ottawa” most likely puts Canada in a “much weaker position” when it comes to pork exports than it should.
