Germany has foot-and-mouth disease outbreak

Foot-and-mouth disease in a herd of water buffalo near Berlin has prompted officials to kill them all and set up a quarantine zone of three kilometers and an observation zone of 10 kilometers.

So far there are no trade bans which would be normal if the disease breaks out at a farm. It is a highly-infectious and deadly disease.

It is the first case in Germany for nearly 40 years.

In 1952 the disease broke out in Saskatchewan and was a major catastrophe and hundreds of cattle and pigs were buried in mass graves and the Canadian borders were closed for exports.
