Global food prices up by 6.7 per cent

Global food prices were 6.7 per cent higher in December than the year before, reports the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.

But global prices for vegetable oils, cereals and dairy products were lower.

The global food price index for December was 20.7 per cent below the all-time high reached in March.

For 2024 as a whole, the index averaged 122, two per cent lower than 2023.

Meat prices rose four-tenths of a per cent in December from November and were 7.1 per cent higher than December, 2023.

The FAO cereal price index was little changed last month from November and was 9.3 per cent below its year-earlier level, as a slight increase for corn offset a drop for wheat.
