Conestoga Meats plans a new facility

Conestoga Meats plans to build a new packing plant east of its existing one near Breslau, according to documents it filed with the Waterloo Region.

It said a new plant would be more efficient than the one that has undergone a number of additions.

The cooperative is owned by 158 producers and is the second-largest in Ontario.

The news of its plans are included in an application to cut down a 14.4-hectare woodlot that has been designated as one of the best in the region.

Staff at the region have given politicians two options – to deny the request or to attach significant conditions.

Conestoga has offered to plant trees on 62 hectares and to support tree-planting initiatives.
